Black Acre are an imprint well-versed with the discovery and subsequent exploration of new, interesting strands of electronic music, but they’re fulfilling their reputation a little too much with this release. There’s not a lot of information to go by on Romare, an as-of-yet unknown producer who has “spent the last year collecting samples and working on a concept: that a new form of music can emerge by investigating the relationship between different musical cultures through sampling.”

This specifically refers to the history of African-American culture, Romare collecting samples of songs, interviews, speeches, field recordings and films in order to “create musical conversations between the past, present and future”.

You can read more info on his facebook page, and you should, because the material itself is some of the most refreshing that 2012 has offered thus far, including titles.

The EP draws upon a range of styles, moving from emotive footwork to low-slung house and hip-hop. The quality of the tracks is unquestionable – by themselves they’d still stand strong, but as you’d expect its the sample work that commands the most attention. You can almost feel the painstaking amount of effort and research that has gone into Meditations on Afrocentrism, such is the depth and variety on offer. Ultimately, it’s exciting to hear a new producer explore unique territory, especially on a subject as deep and complicated as this one, and make it work. You get the impression Romare has fulfilled his mission statement.

Meditations on Afrocentrism is out on March 5th on Black Acre. Listen to The Blues (It Began in Africa) below. You can also listen to some muggy recordings of the remaining EP:-
