Merging the mechanical rigidity of techno with the bounce of UK Funky is nothing new, it’s a marriage thoroughly appreciated for quite a while now; with the former injecting a certain cerebral menace into the latter’s capacity for mindless fun. However that being said, I don’t think it’s necessarily an easy feat to accomplish. To truly do justice to the blend you have to understand both genres and how to clearly express the nuances of both without stepping on toes; and West Country’s Tessela  certainly knows how to appreciate this.

‘D Jane/Channel’ is a thoroughly well-considered gambol through both the aforementioned genres and the margins of a few others. A worthy continuation from last years ‘Slugger’ EP in further establishing his signature sound. The gloriously abrasive samples and schizophrenic rampancy of the rhythm are now transposed to a funkier backdrop; demonstrating a producer within his element both technically and creatively. He’s obviously absorbed a lot  from his contemporaries too.The hard-nosed beating of toms on ‘Channel’ for instance are reminiscent of   Breach, scrubbed in the techno mettle of Blawan. Note however that the comparisons are just for lazy ease of description - he really has excelled in creating a very distinctive sound.

Pretensions about intellectual credibility aside for moment, it should be said that these are essentially two absolute rompers primed and ready for a dance-floor tear up . The proof is in the punch. Looking at them in context of a wider body of work however; gives us a declaration of assurance from an ascending producer who has enough vision to be build his own sound, yet enough technical prowess to see it through.
