This Wednesday saw the launch of Redstripe’s ‘Make With A Redstripe’ – a cultural series showcasing cutting-edge creatives from across the globe and reflecting in particular the DIY culture of Redstripe’s Jamaican roots. Drifting in from a cold November night to a venue suffused with a warming red glow, we immediately latched onto the reggae 7”s being played out by London-based DJ and producer, Al Fingers.
Enjoying the music, the Redstripe and the copious amounts of jerk chicken on offer, we took in the extraordinary work of Yuri Suzuki and Mathew Kneebone – collaborators from opposite sides of the globe – who were celebrating their edition in the series, ‘Make Something from Nothing’. Suzuki and Kneebone’s sculpture, a sound-system influenced by the towering bass heavy sound-systems of Jamaican street culture, employs over 5000 empty cans collected from this year’s Notting Hill Carnival. Standing 2.5 meters high, the towering sound-system stood between two DJ booths, transmitting the bass-heavy selections from Numbers’ Glaswegian co-founder, Spencer, as well as a set from Hessle Audio man, Ben UFO. This sound special was hosted by MC Chunky, who (naturally) MC’d into a Redstripe can microphone.
Between the free drinks and food, DIN set out to capture the event on film to launch our very own video series. Thanks to videographer Tom Gilfillan.
